Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
