RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
